107. Al-Maa'un · Almsgiving

Dismissal of judgment is exposed through harshness toward the orphan and failure to encourage feeding the poor. The criticism extends to ostentatious, heedless prayer and refusal of ordinary assistance, connecting worship directly with responsibility toward others.

A note on Arabic, English and verse numbering

Tanzil’s Arabic source includes the opening basmala with the first verse of surahs other than 9. Pickthall’s numbered translation includes it at 1:1; at other surah openings it is not repeated within the numbered English verse. This display preserves both source conventions. The Arabic is not a collection of all variant readings.

Hast thou observed him who belieth religion?

That is he who repelleth the orphan,

And urgeth not the feeding of the needy.

Ah, woe unto worshippers

Who are heedless of their prayer;

Who would be seen (at worship)

Yet refuse small kindnesses!
