101. Al-Qaari'a · The Calamity

The striking calamity is evoked through images of scattered people and mountains losing their solidity. The weighing of deeds then gives the upheaval a moral focus, contrasting a satisfying outcome with the prospect of consuming fire.

A note on Arabic, English and verse numbering

Tanzil’s Arabic source includes the opening basmala with the first verse of surahs other than 9. Pickthall’s numbered translation includes it at 1:1; at other surah openings it is not repeated within the numbered English verse. This display preserves both source conventions. The Arabic is not a collection of all variant readings.

The Calamity!

What is the Calamity?

Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Calamity is!

A day wherein mankind will be as thickly-scattered moths

And the mountains will become as carded wool.

Then, as for him whose scales are heavy (with good works),

He will live a pleasant life.

But as for him whose scales are light,

A bereft and Hungry One will be his mother,

Ah, what will convey unto thee what she is! -

Raging Fire.
